IASA NTUU "KPI" Projects with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for 2011

According to the results of the competition of the State program on grid technology implementation, hold by NASU in March 2011, among the other winners there are following projects of the IASA NTUU "KPI":

Project 1. "Development of a workshop on grid technologies and distributed computing, data analysis for grid cluster user and administrator training "

Compliance to the Program objectives:
Chapter 6: Organizational and methodological support for personnel training for working in grid-environment and grid-technology application in science, education and in other fields.

Project Purpose:
Since the grid - technology is a rather new trend in information technologies, there is not enough  specialists in Ukraine that could  implement it in academic and other institutions or agencies.
Therefore, the Council of Ministers of Ukraine in 2010 on IASA NASU initiative decreed to introduce a new specialty “System Design” in “computer science” field  for specialist training in spheres of implementation of distributed computing and  grid-technologies in science, education etc.

Today the conception is being finalized and the basic educational and methodological support is being developed for this specialty: education and work plans, plans for basic disciplines, the creation and publication of textbooks, manuals, development of the training grid system and appropriate laboratory facilities, and support of the joint program of Master’s education by NASU on grid-technologies.

The project aims to create a workshop on grid –technology based on distributed computing and Data analysis, which will contribute to faster specialists training in distributed intellectual environments and parallel computing, system administrator training with these new tools, programming basis and applications for distributed computing that require heavy recourses for its functioning. It consist a cycle of experimental researches, that will provide user with some practical skills of grid technology usage for scientific and practical tasks.

As a result of the workshop the participants should:
- Know: Fundamentals of Grid - technologies that allow to combine computing resources and storage resources into a single system, architecture of the national grid - infrastructure, basic principles of the Grid components functioning- systems, technology of  task preparation for usage in Grid -environment;
- Be able to: choose and use middleware for solving scientific - practical problems, adapt software packages  to the Grid environment, use the input language to describe tasks and data, track progress and adjust the computational process during numerical experimentation or process modeling;
- Acquire skills of the practical usage of the most common middleware NorduGrid ARC, gLite 3.1 and 3.2.

On the basis of laboratory workshop a number of seminars for users and grid- site administrators will be conducted.

Achieved results:
As a result of the project in 2011 an interdisciplinary program with a workshop has been created with the following experimental research that students would probe on the basis of existing educational grid system in solving set of individual tasks:
- Work on the computer cluster using local PBS for studying technologies of remote access to the multi-processor computing system and acquire practical skills and compilation techniques on launching simple programs with usage of cluster control system. Acquisition of the user certificate -  user learns to generate the key pair: public key (as a part of the certificate) and private key (for signing the certificate) to receive a certificate, create a proxy certificate and use it;
- studying the technology of remote access to grid resources that run under middleware ARC, when  user uses a computing cluster running under UNIX - compatible OS control, develops task file in the xRSL language to run through middleware ARC according to the assignment, launch the task from access server, with previously created proxy-certificate
- technology study of remote access to grid resources running under middleware gLite, when user develop task file  in the JDL language file to run it through the gLite middleware, according to the assignment, launch the task on access server with previously created proxy certificate, check its status during execution, gets results and analyze them;
Studying, construction of information system and monitoring of industrial GRID - systems that operate under the management of the gLite middleware and ARC and solve  problem of collecting and managing data on the grid state, getting information from many distributed sources. Subsystem is designed to constantly monitor the operation of grid systems and provide timely responses to emerging problems.

Thus, with the help of laboratory practice one can receive the certificate, prepare to start tasks, choose a computing element, which will run the task, monitor the execution, view results of the task and store source files on the computer.
The publication of the proposed laboratory workshop approved by Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports has been made.


Project 2. Development of some basic services for distributed grid coordinating center in the National Institute for Applied Systems Analysis NASU "

Compliance to the Program objectives:
Objective 2.4: The opening of regional branches of CA and the international certificates provision to existing national grid resources and users.
Task 2.2: Creating a system of testing, monitoring and accounting of grid resources’ usage.

Project Purpose:
One of the requirements to the national grid is the presence of CA (CA, Certification Authority). CA Certificates issues Grid-certificates, which are "passports" for all components of the grid (users, components, services). This is reflected in the Regulations of the Ukrainian National Grid (UNG), where the main components of the grid infrastructure in Ukraine Certification Center for users and Grid sites (CA) and with regional branches (RA) are classified.
CA center operates according to the protocols and rules for certification of users of the national grid infrastructure of the European Organization EUGridPMA, and provides services of granting, support and verification of certificates for users of the national grid infrastructure, issuance, maintenance and verification of certificates of grid sites nodes and services of grid sites in the national grid infrastructure, providing a reliable information system uptime, ensures compliance with information security requirements, creating branches of the national certification of users of grid infrastructure in regional and other centers.
The project aims to support the operation and activities of CAs and grid sites users with regional branches (CA) for interagency fired on their purpose and history, in the national grid infrastructure in January 2008. According to the rules and policies of EUGridPMA certificate issuance to accredited CA’s requirements on service availability, time response to users application, security monitoring, auditing are demanded.

Expected results:
1) The opening registration centers in major cities.
When you first receive a certificate, and once in 3 years if the certificate is continued, the user must personally appear in the CA (RA). Currently there are 3 RA - in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Lviv. It is planned to open several more RA (in Simferopol and Donetsk). By the end of 2012 it is desirable to ensure the availability of RA in each regional center, which has GRID users.
2) Holding one-day express courses for existing employees of RA.
Conducting such courses is aimed at staff training for registration centers, at clarifying the rules of Working with user requests, CA and RA interaction.
3) Carrying out online seminars for users.
Seminars are oriented on new users who want to get the certificate, as well as existing users who have difficulty using the certificate in grid. The need to clarify the rules of certificate usage to users is recorded in the "policy of issuing certificates UGRID CA" (https: / / ca.ugrid.org / docs / UGRID _CP_CPS_1.4.pdf), which is based on normative documents of EUGridPMA (including http:/ / www.eugridpma.org/guidelines/IGTF-AP-classic- 4-2.pdf and RFC 3647, http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc 3647.txt).
4) Improving the user experience through the introduction of IP-telephony.
Introduction of new technologies will be more responsive to customer requests, will reduce long distance costs and simplify remote holding seminars.
5)  Refining the rules of the issuance of certificates and other documents.
For accreditation confirmation and further work it is necessary to continue to bring "rules for issuing certificates and other documents with the requirements EUGridPMA and national laws that have changed in 2010.
6) Development of documentation and task descriptions for RA - and CA - operators
For compliance EUGridPMA norms for CA-and RA-operators, particularly in the field of interaction between CA and RA, a set of clear rules must be created.
7) Conduction of internal audits
In compliance with the requirements of EUGridPMA internal audits must be conducted at least once a year. The need to conduct audits is fixed "policy of issuing certificates UGRID CA" (https: / / ca.ugrid.org/docs/UGRID_CP_CPS_1.4.pdf), which is based on normative documents of EUGridPMA (including http://www.eugridpma.org/guidelines / IGTF-AP-classic-4-2.pdf and RFC 3647 http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc 3647.txt).
8) Preparation for external audit
In accordance with the requirements, the Certification Center should be ready to audit process by EUGridPMA representatives. Serious shortcomings Revealed in the work of CAs may lead to termination of its accreditation.
Conducting an internal audit some inconsistencies with the rules of EUGridPMA were discovered in CA work, they should be corrected in the first half of 2011. Repeated internal audit is scheduled for April 2011. Report on EUGridPMA and presentation of results is planned at the conference in Prague on 11-13 May 2011.
9) Switching to a new root certificate.
in connection  (January 2013) with expiration of UGRID CA root certificate a procedure on transition to the new root certificate should be started not less than a year before.

As a result of this project national users are provided with the European quality of grid-service through the Certification Center for grid users and grid-sites with regional branches (SA). The center of the SA itself is able to fruitfully cooperate with other national centers of CA and its employees can attend annual meetings of representatives of European CA share experience. According to the requirements of EUGridPMA at least one representative from each national accredited CA must be present at the meetings (http://www.eugridpma .org / meetings /)

The Statistics of certificates’ issuance for the following years is following: 2008 - 68, 2009 - 184 and 2010 - 243. Usually, the certificate is issued for 1 year. Due to growing interest in the scientific community to the grid technology, by 2011-2012 a significant increase in the number of users who would need Grid Certificates is expected. In Britain, for example, since 2002 nearly 25 000 certificates issued, and currently valid about 9000

Project 3. Development and introduction of the educational methodical support for the targeted masters' training in grid technologies for NASU institutions

Compliance to the Program objectives:

Chapter 6: Organizational and methodological support for personnel training for working in grid-environment and grid-technology application in science, education and in other fields.

Project Purpose:
The main purpose of the project is to organize the joint grid experts training by NASU and KPI, staffing for the application of grid technologies in the academic institutes based on the new specialty "System Design" of the "Computer Sciences" direction, introduced by the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in 2010, initiated by the IASA NASU.
System Design is the inter-disciplinary methodology of the intelligent environments development, designated to solve the complex objects (systems, processes) research problems of different physical domains with computer tools and with active involvement of humans (experts, analysts, engineers, researchers). The objects of System Design research are various complex systems and processes like information environments (e.g. distributed computer systems, semantic web and grid systems), objects of scientific researches (e.g. space and biological), complex technical systems (e.g. electronic integrated circuits or hybrid embedded electronic-mechanical systems), ecological systems, technological or business processes etc.
Joint grid experts training for NASU is based on:
a) education and methodical provisioning (educational curriculums, lecture notes, computer worshops etc.);
b) existing educational grid infrastructure;
c) UMD - Unified Middleware Distribution - and unified access tools for grid services of educational grid infrastructure;
d) workshops in the institutes of NASU and masters' researches on NASU topics.

Masters' training content includes:
a) paradigms and methods of distributed computing and data processing;
b) grid middleware;
c) cloud computing technologies;
d) semantic modeling in grid environment; e) organizational and methodical provision for grid systems.
System Design specialty masters' scientific researches will be conducted according to the topics of the academic institutes based on ESC "Institute for applied system analysis" and resources of the national grid infrastructure of Ukraine and Ukrainian World Data Center connected with international WDC network.

Expected results:
As a result of this project the educational, methodological and scientific background for experts training and retraining will be created. These experts  will be able to provide the operation of the grid environment and its application for science, education and other fields.
The scientific and technical products of the Project fulfillment will include:
1) Educational curriculums of basic and optional masters' training disciplines "Grid and cloud distributed environments for high performance parallel computing", "Data mining in distributed information environments", "Semantic web and grid services", "Data discovery and preprocessing", "Distributed decision making and reasoning systems", "Multimodal user interface", "Distributed data processing systems modeling tools".
2) Physical-technical-style methodology of workshops and researches in NANU institutions with involvement of scientists of the academic institutes (in particular, Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITF), Institute for Molecular Biology and Genetics (IMBG) etc.) into guidance of masters' researches.
3) Educational grid system operating under UMD (Unified Middleware Distribution) of the EMI project for experts of different specialties to gain experience of work in grid environment, including the methodology and workshop of the EGI program. UMD middleware is a joint coordinated product of the ARC, gLite, dCache and UNICORE developers.
4) Preparation and publishing of the textbook "Workshop on exploiting the UMD-controlled grid system in scientific research" by authors both from NASU and MESYS (Ministry of Education, Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine).
